(My Approach to Work)
2006 Jack Ricchiuto
My work is with leaders, teams, organizations, and communities for whom 3 things are true:
- They desire new levels of outcome or performance
- They realize it is not acceptable to wait for someone else to make it happen for them
- They know it's going to take clear goals and the kind of self-trust and self-confidence that comes from using their strengths in new ways
Most of my work addresses 3 core themes:
- Productivity - organization, time management, project management, managing change, being proactive, system development, planning, energy management, leadership impact
- Relationship building - communication, reading people/listening, storytelling, consensus building, trust building, managing feedback, social network weaving, teamwork, inquiry, and authentic engagement
- Innovation - visioning, creativity, thinking outside the box, best practice research, learning, problem solving, continuous improvement, root cause analysis, research & development, prototyping, qualitative market research

What I do is help people do 3 things:
- Get clear on and aligned on what matters to them
- Because change is a constant and life these days is often more complex than simple, it takes time to get clear on what really matters to us. It's easy to have clarity obscured by being more reactive than proactive and focusing more on what we don't like and don't want than what we do. This is the work of finding the power of our voice in the alignment of our purpose and vision. Defining what matters is where passion comes from.
- Understand the strengths and successes they already have that can support their goals
- When we're facing new or difficult challenges, there is a tendency to allow a focus on our weaknesses and failures to obscure understanding of our strengths and successes. Focusing on what we can't do and haven't yet achieved keeps us from being clear on what we can do and can achieve. This is the work of discovering we have what it takes to achieve what matters to us. Understanding our strengths and successes is where confidence and self-trust comes from.
- Use these strengths in new ways to make progress toward what they want to see in their world
- Even when we're clear on purpose, we may not be as clear on path. Focusing on what we don't have and don't know how to do keeps us stuck. This is the work of exploring new ways of using our strengths in moving toward our goals. Using our strengths in new ways is where higher levels of performance and outcomes come from.
What we do together can be described as coaching, training, teaching, and facilitating. In every case, we work together, sharing opportunties and responsibility for achieving these three objectives.
Depending on the scope, complexity, and challenge of work, our engagement can take anywhere from a few conversations to several months.
