An Appreciative Approach to Achieving New Goals
Jack Ricchiuto
When I coach people in their process of achieving new personal goals in their work, I take an appreciative approach. This approach works on a few key principles:
- We tend to have what it takes for us to learn into new ways of performing in our work
- Moving toward what we want is always more effective than moving away from or against what we don't want
- We do our best when there is the greatest degree of alignment between our passions and strengths.
Here is one model I'll use in the process of facilitating someone's learning and development in the areas they decide to work on with me.
A. Start off by identifying what areas of new capabilities you want to achieve.
- What new strengths, new performance, and/or new outcomes do you want to achieve? You can start with your don't wants, but make sure you translate each into a want.
- Create metrics for each area - how could you measure progress and success?
B. Identify your passions related to each area.
- What are your intentions in each area - what are you committed to achieving?
- How does each area align with one or more of your personal values and principles?
- How do you imagine yourself and your world when you arrive at where you want to be in these areas?
- Why do you want to achieve things things?
C. Identify the strengths you have today that align with your passions in each area
- What kinds of knowledge can support your creating what you want?
- What kinds of skills and expertise can support your success?
- What personal qualities and characteristics can support your success?
- Which of your relationships can contribute to what you want to achieve?
D. Activate your strengths
- Visualize times in your life when you engaged any of these strengths - to any degree
- Visualize your achieving what you want to achieve in your current situations - using these strengths
- Visualize how your life and world is better because of this success
